Chamber of Commerce EBR Endorses Petition Drive for City of St. George

The new Chamber of Commerce of East Baton Rouge swore in new officers for 2014 last Tuesday and weighed into the controversy involving the proposed City of St. George.

The organization’s governing board voted unanimously to support efforts by organizers of St. George to call an election on whether to incorporate.  In a statement, the Chamber, which represents small business in the parish and takes a conservative stand on issues, said, “We believe the people of St. George have made a prima facie case that there is a need for a new city and a need for a new school system.  We feel strongly that this proposition should be placed before the voters and publicly debated.  Once that debate has occurred, we will make a decision on whether to support incorporation.  Meanwhile, we applaud the organizers of St. George for bringing so many important issues before this community.”

The Chamber EBR is affiliated with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.  It meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 12 noon at Café Américain.  The website is ChamberEBR.com.
