Petition Deadline May 28

Supporters of the proposed City of St. George have until Thursday, May 28 to turn in enough valid signatures to trigger a referendum on incorporating the new city in this fall’s elections.

St. George supporters will need a total of 17,859 signatures. In March, Registrar of Voters Elaine Lamb certified 15,165, leaving organizers 2,694 short.  However, under state law, St. George has 60 days to file additional signatures, or until May 28.

St. George chairman Norman Browning said Wednesday that supporters need about 500 signatures to meet that target.  However, they hope to have an additional 10 percent to take account of invalid signatures and withdrawn signatures.  Only one thing matters now, he said: Getting signatures.

More than 50 volunteers are working to get signatures, many everyday, he said.

He urged registered voters in St. George who wish to sign the petition to call 366-7764 or go to the website, stgeorgelouisiana.com, and someone will deliver them.
