‘Moon Griffon Show’ Could Be Big Draw For New Radio Station Launching July 10

BATON ROUGE – The Chamber of Commerce of East Baton Rouge is moving forward with its plan to launch a new radio station for Baton Rouge, The Mighty WSGX 95.1 FM.

The target launch date is July 10.

Plans for the station got a boost this week when WSGX made a deal to carry The Moon Griffon Show during the 9 to 11 a.m. time slot Monday through Friday.

Chamber EBR president Woody Jenkins said it was really a surprise to learn that the Moon Griffon Show was available in the Baton Rouge market.

“Moon has a powerful show and brings a large listening audience.  It’s surprising abut very encouraging for us that a new station like ours would be able to sign him up,” he said.“Having Moon Griffon on the station will automatically bring us thousands of listeners.”

“Another thing to bear in mind is that he is a local boy, having graduated from Redemptorist High School. Even though he has been gone from Baton Rouge awhile, his wife’s parents have been in Central for years.  He is very familiar with this market and what it likes and doesn’t like,” Jenkins said.

Griffon will be speaking at the Chamber EBR meeting on Tuesday, June 23, and that will give local residents and the media the opportunity to learn more about him.

WSGX will be a non-profit, non-commercial station.  It cannot sell commercials but it can sell sponsorships.  Jenkins said Griffon will deliver his program commercial-free in order to comply with FCC guidelines, but the station will be able to offer sponsorships to his advertisers.

Jenkins said WSGX will compete with the major radio stations in Baton Rouge. “Developing an audience in radio is completely different from developing an audience in television.  People watch television at home but they listen to radio in their cars.  As we worked on the engineering for this station, our primary goal was to be able to reach people in their automobiles.  The station will be very strong on all major roads and highways in Baton Rouge and St. George, including I-10, I-12, Airline Highway, Florida Boulevard, Siegen, Bluebonnet, Jefferson, and Sherwood. More than 220,000 cars a day will be able to receive the station,” he said.

WSGX will feature news, music from the 50s, 60s,and 70s, and conservative talk.  To some degree, it will be modeled after WLCS, the top Baton Rouge station in the 60’s.

Jenkins said the station will be offered over-the-air at 95.1 FM and on iHeart Radio. It will also be streamed live on the Internet.
