EBR Republican Party Helped Turn Politics Here from Blue to Red

In testimony tuesday at the State Capitol, leaders of the Republican Party in East Baton Rouge Parish told the Committee on House and Governmental Affairs that the past has made strides in moving the parish from reliably Democrat to likely Republican.

Although registered Republicans account for only 79,588 of the parish’s 288,681 registered voters, or 27.5 percent, Republicans now hold

• Four of five parishwide offices, including Sheriff, Assessor, Clerk, and Coroner

• Mayor-President

• Seven of the 12 Metro Council members

• Five of nine East Baton Rouge Parish School Board members

• All but one elected official in Central; the Mayor and all five Councilmen in Zachary, and all elected officials in St. George.

Parish GOP chairman Woody Jenkins credited the high quality of Republican candidates and the hard work of candidates and supporters, and the desire of voters to have a safe, clean, prosperous place to live and work.
