The Story of

St. George Academy

A New Chapter in Learning. Rooted in Heart and Innovation in the newly-established City of St. George, a tuition-free PreK-12 academy is rising that reflects the hopes, dreams, and forward-thinking spirit of its community.

St. George Academy (SGA) is more than just a new educational institution—it’s a bold reimagining of what learning can be. As part of the CSUSA family, which serves more than 81,000 students nationwide, SGA brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the families it serves.

From the moment you walk through its doors, SGA feels different. There’s a sense of purpose, of possibility.

Led by Don Mayes, Ed.D., the academy is built on the belief that every child deserves an education that nurtures both the mind and the heart. That belief is woven into everything—from the way students learn to the way they’re supported as individuals.

Dr. Don Mayes, site leader of St. George Academy, said, “This is a historic moment for the City of St. George, and we are honored to serve such a great community.”

For students in Pre-K through 5th grade, the focus is on building strong academic foundations in reading and math, while also encouraging movement, play, and outdoor exploration. These aren’t just breaks — they’re intentional moments designed to boost brain function, improve mental health, and help children thrive.

It’s a whole-child approach that recognizes learning doesn’t just happen at a desk — it happens in motion, in connection, and in joy. The school’s promise is to build strong minds and good hearts through a relentless commitment to student greatness in school and in life. But SGA’s vision doesn’t stop there.

For students in grades 6–12, the academy is pioneering a blended learning model that offers flexibility, personalization, and real-world relevance. In this model, students work at their own pace, guided by subject-specific instructors and supported by personal learning coaches. Learning can happen at home, at school, or almost any combination of the two.

The learning environment at St. George Academy is designed like a modern workspace — open, collaborative, and creative — mirroring the kinds of settings students will encounter in college and careers.

“We’re building an educational model that reflects the future of learning — where flexibility, personalization, and innovation come together to support every student’s success,” Mayes said. This approach is especially powerful for families juggling extracurriculars like travel, sports, or dance.

With a dynamic schedule and digital tools, students can stay on track academically while pursuing their passions. And for those who want to accelerate their learning, the model opens doors to early college credits and deeper exploration of subjects they love.

At its core, St. George Academy is about empowerment. It’s about helping students become confident, independent thinkers who know how to advocate for themselves and navigate the world with resilience and purpose. It’s about breaking free from the one-size-fits-all model and creating a space where every learner is seen, supported, and inspired.

This is a historic moment for St. George, and SGA is proud to be part of it. With no tuition and a commitment to excellence, the academy is opening doors for families across the city. It’s not just a place to learn—it’s a place to grow, to dream, and to build a future.

Academic Excellence. At St. George Academy, academic programming is designed to meet the needs of every learner through a personalized, community-centered approach. SGA benefits from a proven educational model that emphasizes high expectations, ethical practices, and student-centered learning.

K–5. Building Strong Foundations. In grades PK–5, students engage with CSUSA’s Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum, which aligns with Louisiana Standards and ensures mastery of essential concepts within a structured time frame.

Teachers use a variety of resources to tailor instruction to individual student needs, fostering academic achievement and personal growth. The curriculum is enriched by:

• Organized outdoor breaks to support physical and mental well-being.

• Personalized Learning Plans (PLPs) for every student, tracking progress and encouraging ownership of learning.

• A Community of Character initiative that features 18 virtues including empathy, responsibility, and citizenship.

Grades 6 to 12. Blended Learning for the Future. SGA is pioneering a blended learning model for middle and high school students, combining digital curriculum with in-person instruction.

SGA leverages technology to make learning more human. This flexible approach allows students to:

• Learn at their own pace.

• Receive support from subject-specific instructors and personal learning coaches.

• Manage their schedules and academic goals through a learning management system.

• Accelerate learning, pursue early college credits, and balance extracurricular commitments.

• Learn from home or at school on a flexible schedule. The academy’s modern learning spaces are designed to resemble professional work environments, promoting collaboration, creativity, and real-world readiness.

Community-Driven Education. St. George Academy is deeply embedded in the local community, partnering with organizations and families to support student success.
