Council Lays Foundation of Government
The St. George City Council has moved rapidly over the past two months to lay the foundation for the new city’s government.
Some of the most important actions were:
• Named Lorraine Beaman as City Clerk and Sheri Morris as City Attorney
• Named The Advocate as legal journal
• Created a Planning & Zoning Commission
• Adopted a Code of Ordinances
• Leased space from the St. George Fire Dept. for City Hall
• Hired Mike Hefner as demographer to propose five Council districts
• Approved an Emergency Management Plan
• Called an election Dec. 7 to transfer the 2% parish sales tax to the City of St. George
• Created a website at stgeorgela.net
• Adopted a city budget from 2024-2025
• Created a one-year moratorium on new billboards
• Approved an agreement with Animal Control to continue to provide services
• Joined the City of St. George in a suit by Norman Browning and Chris Rials to block the annexation of property by the City of Baton Rouge after the incorporation of the City of St. George
• Chose Hancock Bank as fiscal agent
• Appointed members of the Board of Adjustments
• Appointed members of the Charter Commission
