History. Founded in 1972, Shenandoah Elementary has over five decades of history serving the Shenandoah community. It was built to support the then-new Shenandoah subdivision in Baton Rouge. Over the years, the school has developed a strong reputation for academic excellence. Shenandoah earned recognition as an “A” rated school and has been named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, a prestigious honor for high-performing schools. It has also received Top Gains and Equity Honors awards for student achievement and progress. This legacy of excellence highlights Shenandoah Elementary’s continual commitment to meeting the needs of its diverse learners and community.
Tuition. Shenandoah is a public school and does not charge tuition.
Athletics. Even at the elementary level, Shenandoah offers several sports and physical activity programs for its students. Participation in sports helps build teamwork and school spirit.
All teams are co-ed and all are for 4th and 5th graders. They are volleyball, basketball, cheer, dance, and track and field.
These programs provide students with early exposure to team sports and promote physical fitness.
Extracurricular. Beyond athletics, Shenandoah encourages student involvement in clubs and activities to enrich the school experience. Opportunities available to students include:
Student Organizations. Shenandoah has a Student Council where student representatives learn leadership and plan school events. Also Jr. Beta Club, Kids Orchestra, and Beach Club.
Academics. Shenandoah offers traditional education classes from PreK through 5th grade. Gifted services are also available to K-5 students as Resource (pull out program several times per week) or in Self-Contained classrooms. Talented Services are available for K-5 in Visual Art, Music, and Theater for students who qualify.
Parent Teacher Association. Another incredible attribute of Shenandoah Elementary School is the parent involvement. SES typically has a room parent (or multiple) for each of their 30+ homeroom classes. There is also a phenomenal PTA, which is active throughout the school year and summer. The PTA hosts two large fundraisers each year, a Fun Run in the Fall Semester, and a Carnival in the Spring. This year’s carnival is slated for March 13 and 14, and is open to the entire community! Families can enjoy rides, game booths, yummy food, and a silent auction. PTA uses the funds raised from these events, as well as smaller ones, like selling spirit wear, to host free Family Nights every quarter, offering teacher grants each semester, supporting the staff through meals and treats for special occasions, and large purchases like the new shade sail that was erected last year over a portion of our outdoor court and more!
Updates. The Administration has been hard at work over the summer making updates to the interior of the school. Freshly painted classroom doors, new carpet in the auditorium, and a new cafeteria wall mural has everyone excited about a brighter new year. An exterior update that community members may notice is a brand new play structure on the lower grade playground. Shenandoah has plans to continue upgrading the school in the future for all the little Eagles returning to The Nest for a new school year!
Enrollment. Families typically register in person at the school. Shenandoah is a zoned neighborhood school, so the child should reside in the school’s attendance zone.
