History. The Story of Woodlawn Elementary: A Legacy of Growth, Innovation, and Community. Nestled in the heart of Baton Rouge’s Shenandoah neighborhood, Woodlawn Elementary School has long stood as a cornerstone of educational excellence and community pride. Since opening its doors at 8160 Antioch Road, the school —lovingly known as the home of the Cubs — has grown alongside the families it serves. It has evolved from a traditional neighborhood school into a forward-thinking academic hub for young learners in Pre-K through fifth grade.
Throughout the years, Woodlawn has embraced change with purpose. As technology reshaped education, the school equipped every student in grades 3–5 with a Chromebook, and transformed its mediacenter into a flexible, student-driven learning environment. These innovations have placed Woodlawn at the forefront of STEM education in East Baton Rouge Parish. However, the school’s vision extends far beyond academics.
With a strong emphasis on the whole child, Woodlawn nurtures emotional resilience, character, and leadership. Programs like PBIS, the “Power of Yet” growth mindset philosophy, Student Council Ambassadors, and ICare help students develop confidence, compassion, and a sense of purpose.
As a designated Title I school, Woodlawn serves a diverse and dynamic student body, where more than half of its students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Still, the school consistently delivers above-average academic performance, bolstered by strong community support and a faculty deeply committed to student success. From the Gifted Resource Program and Talented Arts offerings to its rigorous Scholastic Academy, Woodlawn provides advanced opportunities for learners of all abilities.
Beyond the classroom, students shine in performing arts, service, and extracurricular activities that develop both creativity and leadership. With roughly 700 students and a tight-knit team of teachers and staff, Woodlawn remains a place where every child is seen, supported, and inspired to grow. Rooted in tradition but always reaching forward, Woodlawn Elementary is more than a school—it’s a living example of how innovation, heart, and community can transform lives, one young learner at a time.
Woodlawn Elementary School, home of the Cubs, is committed to academic excellence, a focus on the performing arts, and a dedication to creating an environment that supports critical thinking through an emphasis on STEM. The school offers a Gifted Resource Program, Talented Program, Scholastic Academy Program and an English Language Learner Program. Our students succeed by incorporating a variety of resources into their instructional day.
The school expands learning opportunities through an extended-day program and an open-access media center.
