BRIEF HISTORY

Woodlawn Middle School, located at 14939 Tiger Bend Road in the new City of St. George, serves grades 6–8 under the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. It was established in July 2014, transitioning into the newly-built middle school facility after the older campus (formerly Woodlawn High) was replaced .

There are numerous factors that make Woodlawn Middle School one of East Baton Rouge Parish’s premier middle schools.  We have a wide range of academic programs including Gifted, Magnet, Scholastic Academy, Great Scholars, and a Talented Program.  Our gifted classes provide a high degree of complexity and extend beyond the prescribed curriculum offered in traditional classes.  The Magnet

Program offers an accelerated and rigorous curriculum which will prepare stu-dents for college and career related paths.  Students will take specialized courses such as forensics and advanced robotics.  The Great Scholars Program offers instruction at an accelerated pace according to students’ academic needs.  In addition, our traditional classes give students the necessary skills to reach their full academic potential.  Furthermore, our special education classes are designed to provide individualized instruction. All students have access to challenging and rigorous curriculum with educational support.

We offer the required core curriculum subjects at each grade level as well as a rich variety of electives.  Elective classes include art, choir, band, strings, robotics, radio and TV broadcasting, drama, and technology application.

Athletics. Our offerings include

football, girls and boys basketball, swimming, volleyball, and softball.

Extracurricular. Woodlawn Middle offers more than 20 clubs.

The Gifted Program is an educational program for students identified as gifted in grades PreK-12.  Classes provide a high degree of complexity and extend beyond the prescribed curriculum offered in regular classes.  Classes are taught by teachers certified in Gifted Education or working on their certification and have reduced class size (23:1) in order to individualize each student’s educational program.  Students have been evaluated and identified as gifted by Pupil Appraisal Services.  Students with a Gifted exceptionality have an Individual Education Program (IEP) and are a part of Exceptional Student Services.

Great Scholars Academy is a fairly new accelerated program with highly qualified teachers and a rigorous curriculum for 6th-12th graders.  This program parallels the gifted program, but the Great Scholars will be in their own separate classes.  Great Scholars do not participate in gifted classes.  Class size is 23:1.  Students must maintain and overall 2.5 GPA or higher to continue in the program.  Students must meet one or more of the following for admission into the program.  They must have scored at the 84th percentile or higher on a district approved intelligence test or have two masteries or above in two subject areas on a recent standardized test in math, reading, science, and/or social studies administered within the last 12 months.  Students considering the GS program have to submit an application that has to be approved by the EBRP Gifted office.  This program was originally created to accommodate those SA students who did not pass the gifted evaluation but were too advanced to return to the traditional classroom.
